<strong>ONGOING EVENTS – 2011</strong>
<strong>Open Mic – In Partnership with the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society and The Ontario Poetry Society – Join the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society and the Ontario Poetry Society for monthly evenings of stories and poetry. An open mic will be available for local writers and readers to come and share their work and that of their favourite authors. Those interested in reading are asked to sign up at the event (first-come, first-served).

<strong>PAST EVENTS</strong>
<strong>Aug 23-25 – Social Science of the Final Frontier – The Sudbury Hypergraphic Society hosted an evening out with Robert J. Sawyer and Julie E. Czerneda as part of the Social Science of the Final Frontier conference at Laurentian University. Ken (E.) Lillie-Paetz was a guest speaker on the Local authors / Local thinkers panel were he rambled on about some strange theory that Pluto needs him to find away to add to its size so it can be considered a planet again. <strong>July 23-29 – Words In the Wilderness – The Sudbury Hypergraphic Society hosted the Words In The Wilderness Literary Festival which featured a week of events in Sudbury, Ontario. Opening night featured a welcome from Sudbury’s Mayor John Rodriguez and a reading by Sudbury’s Poet Laureate Roger Nash. <strong>April 9-11 – Ad Astra Convention</strong>
<strong>Members of the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society attended Toronto’s Ad Astra convention, which brought together a collection of writers, publishers, performers, vendors and artists to share their love of the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres. Two SHS members, Miriam H. Harrison and Ken Lillie-Paetz, were scheduled as panelists to share their experiences from the world of writing</strong>.
<strong>March 26, 2010 – Stuff Out of Our Mouths<strong>

All who attended were welcome to read their work. Among the readers were Sudbury’s Poet Laureate, Roger Nash, and his wife Chris, as well as Andrea Thompson, a spoken word artist visiting from Toronto. SHS member that read their work were Miriam Harrison, John Rice, Ken Lillie-Paetz and Basil Morrison.<p> </p><p> </p>
<strong> March 23rd — Writer’s Reserve Grant awarded to Ken Lillie-Paetz<strong>

The Ontario Arts Council has generously awarded author Ken Lillie-Paetz a Writer’s Reserve Grant to work on his project <em>Bodies of Work</em>. This project started as a series of one-page comic book horror vignettes called <em>OPEN</em>, and became a regular feature in Doorways Magazine. A novella called Knock Knock was then co-written based on the characters from <em>Open</em>, by Bram Stoker Award winning authors Gary Braunbeck, John Everson, and J.F. Gonzalez (2008 Doorways Halloween Special). The mechanics of creating <em>OPEN</em> was also discussed in Writer’s Workshop of Horror published by Woodland Press (2009). The Writer’s Workshop of Horror won the 2010 Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in Non-fiction.
<strong>March 12 – 13, 2010 – My Bloody Valentine II</strong>
The second annual My Bloody Valentine art show brought together artists and musicians from Sudbury and beyond to showcase their talents and sell their wares. Sudbury Hypergraphic Society member Miriam H. Harrison was present to represent the literary arts and sell copies of her poetry chapbooks.
<strong> Jan 22, 2010 — Reading Rocks The North Literacy Conference</strong>
Members of the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society displayed and promoted their works in various disciplines (poetry, comic books, children’s books, flash fiction and magazine art direction) at the 1st annual Reading Rocks the North Literacy Conference. Miriam H. Harrison, Vice-President of the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society and Branch Manager of The Ontario Poetry Society, was in attendance to promote the upcoming event Stuff Out of Our Mouths : An Open Mic Evening of Poetry and Short Fiction.
<strong> December 8, 2009 — Guest Speaker Laurentian University School of Education</strong> Sudbury Hypergraphic Society member Ken Lillie-Paetz was asked to speak at the Laurentian University School of Education about his job as an Artist / Educator for the Royal Conservatory. Ken explained the advantages of this program and how teaching the curriculum is possible through the medium of comic book creation regardless of the subject.
<strong>November 20, 2009 – Laurentian University’s LUminaries Reading Series</strong>
Laurentian University presented poet and novelist Priscila Uppal, author of six books of poetry, two novels, and a critical study on elegies, We Are What We Mourn. Following Uppal’s reading and question period, members of the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society performed readings of their work. The event was hosted by Laurence Steven, professor at Laurentian University and publisher at Your Scrivener Press.
<strong>November 13, 2009 –- Good Enough to Eat: A collection of culinary art</strong>
Members of the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society performed readings of their work at the reception for the Good Enough to Eat exhibit, curated by Sarah King Gold. The event, which was held at Fromagerie Elgin, included art pieces by thirteen local artists, all inspired by the culinary world.
<strong>Nov. 1, 2009 — CUPE : Jump Up For Childcare Children’s Concert</strong>
<a href=”http://sudburyhypergraphicsociety.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/hamstersigning2.jpg”><img title=”hamstersigning2″ src=”http://sudburyhypergraphicsociety.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/hamstersigning2.jpg?w=300″ alt=”" width=”300″ height=”224″ /></a>Nov. 1st, Sudbury Hypergraphic Society member Ken Lillie-Paetz was the featured author at the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Jump Up For Childcare children’s concert. Ken read from his new kid’s story Brodie and the Ugly Baby. Ken and artist Marcus Froment signed prints (featuring Ken’s pet hamster who makes recurring cameos in the Brodie and the Ugly Baby series) for the children after the concert. The hamster, however, was too tuckered out from rolling around in his plastic ball in the guitar case of featured musical act Genticorum during Ken’s reading to sign any autographs.
<strong>Oct. 30, 2009 — Dark Arts and Devilry : Come let us introduce you to the things that go bump in the night.</strong>

Also included that evening were readings from members of the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society – Aura Roy, Miriam H. Harrison, Basil Morrison, Clay Campbell and Ken Lillie-Paetz. This event received press from the Northern Life, SNAP Sudbury and a live CBC radio interview.

<strong>July 3-5, 2009 — Northern Lights Festival Boreal</strong>

The Sudbury Hypergraphic Society, in conjunction with the Sudbury Writers Guild, hosted a booth at the 2009 Northern Lights Festival Boreal. The two writing groups spent the weekend informing festival attendees about various writing events going on over the course of the next year and drumming up support for the literary arts. In attendance from the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society were Miriam H. Harrison, Ken Lillie-Paetz and Clay Campbell.
<strong>May 25, 2009 — Robert J. Sawyer Visit</strong>

<a href=”http://sudburyhypergraphicsociety.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/sawyer-group2.jpg”><img title=”sawyer-group” src=”http://sudburyhypergraphicsociety.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/sawyer-group2.jpg?w=300″ alt=”" width=”300″ height=”200″ /></a>In a much anticipated event, the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society hosted the Dean of Canadian Science Fiction (and author of the novel FlashForward that is now a tv show on ABC), Robert J. Sawyer, at the Laughing Buddha. Sawyer graciously answered numerous questions from the fourteen antendees. In the picture (from left to right): Ken Lillie-Paetz, Shawn Gray, Miriam H. <strong>March 27-29, 2009 — Ad Astra Convention</strong>

Members of the Sudbury Hypergraphic Society went on a research journey to Ad Astra in Toronto to learn more about the writing and publishing world. In attendence were Miriam H. Harrison and Ken Lillie-Paetz. Ken was also there as an Art Show Judge and spoke on a number of horror-related panels.
